The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) on Thursday approved the first-in-class version of the drug, orlistat, for use in adults with a BMI of 28 kg/m2 or more. The new drug comes in a generic version of the widely-used prescription weight loss drug Xenical, orlistat.

The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approved Xenical, orlistat, as a first-in-class drug in March 2017. The drug's label notes that the drug contains 120 mg of orlistat, but it is not available in the United States.

The drug's approval came on the heels of reports in January that orlistat caused heart problems in some people, including those who took a high dose of the drug. A previous FDA advisory committee report that included reports of heart attacks, strokes and kidney problems, said that a "large number of patients" had developed cardiac side effects after taking orlistat, and it was unclear whether the side effects were from the drug or from other factors. The FDA has yet to determine if the side effects are related to orlistat. Orlistat can increase blood pressure and triglyceride levels, which can increase the risk of coronary artery disease.

"We do believe it's important for people to monitor their blood pressure and for them to take appropriate steps to prevent cardiovascular events," said Sidney Wolfe, director of the FDA's Center for Drug Evaluation and Research. "Because the FDA has no information on its own about side effects from orlistat, it's important for patients to be aware of the risk to their bodies."

In a statement, the FDA said that the new drug is "not being marketed in the United States."

The FDA has not approved orlistat for use in adults with a BMI of 27 kg/m2 or more.

"We have been concerned about possible adverse effects on the cardiovascular system that could increase the risk of serious cardiovascular events and potentially lead to death in patients with cardiovascular disease," said an FDA statement.

PATIENTS

PATIENTS have been given to patients at risk of developing diabetes, a type of condition in which a person develops symptoms of diabetes and has a higher risk of developing cardiovascular disease, according to a published study.

The researchers used a type of laboratory blood glucose testing in a large patient population to screen patients for diabetes and used the results to develop a drug to help patients manage diabetes and treat cardiovascular disease.

The FDA added that the drugs are not currently approved for use in the United States.

PATIENTS are prescribed to people with type 2 diabetes, which causes the body to use insulin more. People with diabetes are at an increased risk of developing the disease. The risk is highest in the presence of high blood pressure, high cholesterol or diabetes, and in those who are taking drugs to lower blood pressure.

The study, published in the May 2018 issue of the Journal of Clinical Endocrinology, compared orlistat to a placebo group, and also found that there were fewer serious cardiovascular events associated with the use of orlistat, compared with the placebo group.

PATIENTS also had a lower rate of serious cardiovascular events, such as coronary artery disease, when compared with a control group.

A clinical trial conducted by the National Institutes of Health and the National Diabetes Foundation found that a higher percentage of people taking orlistat developed heart problems in people taking it.

The results of the study showed that orlistat can cause fewer serious cardiovascular events in people taking it, compared with the placebo group.

A review of more than 2,000 patients found that the drug was more effective than a placebo, but that the patients had less severe cardiovascular side effects than those taking the drug.

The study also found that the patients who took orlistat had a lower incidence of serious cardiovascular events than those who took a placebo.

The FDA has yet to approve the use of orlistat for treating diabetes.

People with diabetes is more likely to develop the disease.

The FDA said that the new drug is not being marketed in the United States. The drug is available as a generic.
